    • Below are some helpful tips that may be useful to a parent of a child, in the middle school that were compiled by our teachers and students:

*Provide opportunities to read over the summer to accelerate reading growth.  There are a lot of options!  Parents can read a book together with their child, visit the public library, try a 3 month free Audible membership and listen to a book, help your child carve out time to read each day.  Any reading will help to prepare for 6th grade!

*Have a good attitude and lots of pencils!

    * Sign up to view your child’s grades and assignments on-line through our website. Have students access the 6th grade homework site on www.newportsd.org, “For Students” tab, then click on 6th Grade.  If you are using a mobile device, you must first go to MENU, Site Navigation, then you will see the “For students” tab.  This website is updated daily by teachers and can be used to see when assignments are due and when quizzes/tests will be.

*If your child forgets a book at school, he or she may have access to the online book.

*Provide an area of your home for your child to do homework quietly

*Contact the staff at school when you have questions or concern

*From the Nurse:  If your child is going to have a physical exam in 5th grade please ask your physician to print off a copy of the exam for the school nurse as this exam will be good for the mandated 6th grade exam that is required by the state.
